In India, married women keep a day-long fast on the Chaturthi Tithi, Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the Moon) in the Kartik month to pray for the well-being of their husband. This fasting ritual is called Karwa Chauth Vrat, and the day is also referred to as Karak Chaturthi. These days, even unmarried girls observe this vrat to pray for a life partner of their liking. As per the Purnimant calendar followed in north India, Karwa Chauth is observed in the month of Kartik. And according to the Amavasyant calendar, it is celebrated in the Ashwin month. The names of the months vary by the date remains the same.
